In a historic election, Velimir Zajec has been chosen as the new president of Dinamo Zagreb, marking a new era for the club after decades under the influence of Zdravko Mamić.
Today, Dinamo Zagreb held its election assembly, heralded as the dawn of a new era for a club that has spent a significant portion of its recent history under the shadow of the current fugitive from Croatian authorities, Zdravko Mamić. With 31 votes for and 19 against, Velimir Zajec defeated Maksimir's familiar face Mirko Barišić to become the new president of the club. This shift signifies a change in leadership after 24 years, as Barišić had been at the helm of Dinamo since 2000, at least officially.
Zajec, who played for Dinamo between 1974 and 1984, later served the club in various capacities, including technical director, financial director, sports trainer, and coach.
"I am grateful for the support and to those who ensured that the club's first democratic elections went smoothly. My team and I will do everything to elevate the club to a higher level. We want our fans to be satisfied. This is a great victory for democracy. Dinamo has gained a new team of people who will give their all for this club. Dinamo is football, Dinamo is love. The most important thing to say is – we have Dinamo!" said the new president of the Blues.
